He holds a master’s degree in linguistics and literary studies from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and his thesis was awarded the MUMA Scholarship for Literary Studies as well as the Herman Servotte Prize. Since its relocation to Montreal in 2025, Parham has been Associate Director of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute, where he also teaches. In 2024, he received the Ian Lancashire Student Promise Award for his work on the relationship between distant reading and close reading, published in Digital Studies/Le champ numérique.
\n
Episode Summary
\n
Traditional literary studies focus on a small number of texts at a time, but new digital tools allow researchers to explore vast collections of novels and poems that they would never be able to read in a lifetime. However, these methods are often criticized for losing sight of the literariness of their object of study. Today, Parham Aledavood discusses telescopic reading, a research methodology applied to literature that combines distant reading and close reading. His work lies at the intersection of quantitative and qualitative methods. It is an iterative process at the crossroads of disciplines.
\n
Available on the podcast website.
\n
Also available on all major podcast platforms (Spotify, Apple, Google, etc.).
\n
Credits
\n
\n
Guest: Parham Aledavood
\n
Interviewer: Yann Audin, with the voice of Clara Grometto
\n
Editing: Emma Walker-Dubé
\n
Original concept: Marcello Vitali-Rosati
\n
",

"title": "Reflection on Concepts in the Human Sciences – Workshop with Pierre Lévy",
      "content_html": "
On March 31, April 7, and April 16, 2026, Pierre Lévy will deliver a series of lectures on the role of concepts in the human sciences.
\n
Description
\n
We can neither think nor speak without conceptualizing, without using “categories.” Critical reflection on the concepts we use is what distinguishes philosophical and scientific activities. This three-session seminar introduces a reflection on the concepts of the human sciences. Starting from the idea that concepts are intellectual tools rather than fixed realities independent of practical contexts, what criteria allow us to distinguish “good” concepts from “bad” ones? According to William of Ockham, the fewer concepts we have in our toolbox, the better our theories will be. From an empiricist perspective, the best concepts are those that account for the richness of experience while leaving as little unexplained as possible. Without dismissing these classical criteria, I will argue for a heuristic approach: the best systems of concepts are (also) those that suggest new observations, help illuminate our intellectual blind spots, and open up interpretive possibilities rather than closing them.
\n
Schedule
\n
Tuesday, March 31 at 2:00 PM
\n
The first session will be devoted, first, to defining concepts, and then to reviewing the classical questions concerning the relationships between words and concepts, between individuals and concepts, and among concepts themselves (networks of concepts). I will then revisit the major issues concerning the origin of concepts (innate or acquired) and their nature (the famous problem of universals opposing realists and nominalists). I will conclude by addressing the enigma of the first concepts, from which others can be derived.
\n
Tuesday, April 7 at 2:00 PM
\n
During the second session, I will analyze several key concepts in the human sciences, starting with those organized around the triad: sign / interpretant / referent. I will highlight the ambiguities and richness of concepts such as reflective thought, language, memory, society, affect, world, truth, life, and space. Drawing on examples from the history of ideas, we will see that each of these can structure a systematic understanding of human beings.
\n
Thursday, April 16 at 2:00 PM
\n
The third session will build on the results of the second by proposing a range of ideal types of technical functions that could help us—heuristically and critically—better understand contemporary societies. These include: the interface, the medium, the container, the gift, the toy, fire, the measuring instrument, the organ, and the node. If time permits, I will extend my analysis to semiotic and social functions.
",

The research focuses on the theatre’s formative years, from its foundation in 1827 to the Unification of Italy. By analyzing a vast array of materials from the State Archive of Prato - including administrative records, correspondance, architectural plans, and stage machinery specifications - the study reconstructs the organizational, economic and cultural mechanisms of 19th-century theatrical life in Tuscany.
\n
A key outcome of the project is the development of an interactive digital model, designed in collaboration with the Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques (CRIHN) in Montréal. This digital environment integrates heterogeneous sources into a unified system, offering new possibilities for both scholarly research and public engagement. By connecting historical investigation with digital tools, the project ensures that the \"theatre workshop\" of the past remains dynamic and accessible for a contemporary audience.
",

A computer is a machine for modeling. And if these models then don't work at all... well, that's even better! The argument will be illustrated with a concrete case: the use of computational approaches to better understand the literary form of variation in the Greek Anthology.
\n
The session will be followed by a discussion period and a friendly reception.
",
