The digital sphere encourages a redefining of the concept of the virtual, a term already employed by two traditions—philosophy and physics—that have assigned it contradictory meanings. Today, thinking about the virtual is, before all else, a political responsibility. The political sense of virtual identities, of virtual communities, of virtual reality will always be affected by a deep-rooted ambiguity: the virtual nature of these technologies will be, on one hand, an opening to new possibilities of freedom and, on the other, a cage which controls and manages individuals by centralized power.
